Intel has prototypes of tablets and smartphones “Intel Inside”

The N ° 1 worldwide in microprocessors has unveiled the first prototypes of aircraft types tablet and smartphone equipped with the Medfield chip. Availability is scheduled for the first half of 2012.
Faced with the general offensive of competition, Intel could not stay longer away from a market that shows the highest rates of growth and just seriously interfere with his pre-squared, ie PCs. Last week, Technology Review has been able to test the first prototypes of tablets and phones with the chip Medfield, all running Google Android.

These prototypes are not intended to be produced but are considered “Reference Designs” which should serve as inspiration for manufacturers so that they take the quintessence of Intel processors. “They can use as many or as few of these models they want,” said Stephen Smith, vice president of Intel’s Technology Review.
System-on-a-chip
Medfield is the latest variant of Atom processors for mobile. So far, these models did not affect the dominance of ARM processors, especially since they consume more energy performance equivalent. The cause of this loss was related to the design of the processor that incorporated several chips. Medfiled finally managed to combine the key functions in a single piece of silicon. This process, called system-on-a-chip, the heyday of ARM in smartphones and was the main handicap of Intel in this area. Party later in the race for “system-on-a-chip”, the California manufacturer now has a more advanced technology. Medfield is engraved on a base of 32 nm when the best work in ARM 40-45. Consequently, it will be possible to carry more power on the same surface. Of course, ARM will also get 32 models later in the year 2012, Intel announced already prints 22 nanometers to 2013 when the ARM will not jump until 2014.
According to Tech Review tests, the performances are excellent, including a function that can capture 10 images in 8 megapixel full size in less than a second. The prototype tablet has a significantly larger screen than iPad2 for an equivalent weight. The software is installed the latest version of Android: Ice Cream Sandwich.
