The rumored for several days but it is now confirmed: the social network Facebook seizes Gowalla. Not for the service itself, but for its employees.
Facebook became more interested as the founders of Gowalla social network. By buying Gowalla, Facebook has not got hold of the data and close the site next month.
"There are about two months, my co-founder Scott and I have seen F8 [the Facebook Developers Conference]. A few weeks later, Facebook called and it was clear that the way our team could have an impact was to work together, "Josh Williams wrote on his blog.
The location-based service launched in 2007 was overshadowed by his main rival, Foursquare. So that in September, Gowalla changed his vocation to become a tour guide in the sauce "social".
Most employees will be transferred Gowalla Austin, Texas, headquarters of Facebook in California. According to CNN, they will work to implement the feature "Timeline" of Facebook, announced in September that has yet to be applied to all social networking profiles.
As for Gowalla, the service will disappear at the end of January 2012. The co-founder of the service says it will be easy for members to export their data.
The announcement comes just days after Facebook has confirmed its intention to increase the number of its employees. The social network, with over 800 million members, has just opened an office in New York.
